St Michael's School is situated on Greater Palm Island 55 km north-east of Townsville.
Greater Palm is about 22km long and up to 5km wide in parts. View on Google Maps. The Palm Island group is made up of 10 islands. The population of the island is around 3000, the great majority being Indigenous. It is a State Government Aboriginal Settlement. A combination of green mountains and golden beaches offers a scenic view from all angles.
Set within the foothills of Mount Bentley, and looking out to the beach, St Michael's School nestles in one of the prettiest spots on the island.
It is a Catholic primary school with its origins dating back to 1938, established at the Casements where the present airstrip is located. Its present site, established in 1969 is located on the outer rim of the main residential area with a beach front, a creek, the Banfield Highway and green hills forming its surrounds.
Officially listed as a remote location, Palm Island is accessed by an air, ferry and barge service. The island itself has a unique beauty, but it shares with other remote locations unique challenges in many everyday situations.
